Turkey death toll from bootleg booze rises to 18

The death toll in Turkey from drinking bootleg liquor has risen to 18 after six more people died in hospital over the past two days, state media said Sunday. The victims had all consumed raki, a strong aniseed-flavoured liquor which is Turkey's national drink, which health authorities believe had been infused with lethal quantities of methyl alcohol. Another 15 are in critical condition in hospital in Istanbul after drinking the tainted alcohol, the Anatolia news agency said.

Indonesia is preparing warships as a last resort to evacuate children and others suffering from smoke inhalation from slash-and-burn fires, a minister said on Friday, as the country struggles to contain fires expected to continue for weeks. Southeast Asia has suffered for years from annual “haze” caused by forest and peat clearing across Indonesia, which has come under increasing political pressure to stop the problem, but so far to no avail. Connecticut judge drops 1992 murder case against disabled man

A mentally disabled Connecticut man whose 1992 murder and rape conviction was overturned earlier this year after he spent a quarter century in prison can never be tried again for the crimes, a Connecticut judge ruled on Friday. Prosecutors had asked a state Supreme Court judge to leave open the possibility of another trial for Richard Lapointe, 69, drawing fire from his defense attorneys who said new DNA evidence proved him innocent. Lapointe spent 26 years behind bars for the 1988 rape and murder of his ex-wife's grandmother, 88-year-old Bernice Martin.

Volkswagen CEO ‘deeply sorry’ for breach of US environment rules

GE wins EU approval to buy Alstom’s power unit

By Foo Yun Chee BRUSSELS (Reuters) – General Electric won European Union antitrust clearance on Tuesday to buy Alstom's power unit after agreeing to sell some of the French company's assets to Italian competitor Ansaldo Energia. The European Commission said the concessions allayed its earlier concerns that the 12.4-billion-euro ($13.9 billion) deal would reduce competition to two major players, namely the merged company and Germany's Siemens . GE will divest Alstom's large turbine product line and the technology it is developing for very large turbines to Ansaldo, which is 40 percent owned by Italian state-backed investment fund Fondo Strategico Italiano and another 40 percent by China's Shanghai Electric .
